I tried Apple First Aid and it said there were major problems but it
could not fix them. I don't have DiskWarrior but I ran Norton and it
repaired the disk and then it mounted. After that, launched xpf and back
into X without any more problems. Thanks for the good advice, Eric.

Well 3 cheers for Nortons Utility 'cause that was condemned to the worst software of the century by many. Nortons also works for me many times where others failed. Glad it worked.
