Make sure you try dropping down to thousands of colors, not millions. That'll speed things up a bit. There was also a program that killed the dropped, 3D shadows which OS X uses, which also speeds things up a bit. "ShadowKiller" I think, you might check VersionTracker.com. I think OS X looks kind of clunky at 800x600.
