Thanks for all the help that folks have given me both on and off the list.
Unfortunately I still cannot boot my PowerMac 7500 in MacOS 10.1.5 (with
XLR8 Mach Carrier G4 MPe). I get all the way through the boot sequence then
hang right before the login screen comes up. If anyone needs a recap see
Digest #575 or my e-mail of Sept 28th. Peter da Silva suggested a couple of
things that may be causing the problem. I did try to rename the Netinfo
database to get it to rebuild (unsuccessful) and have checked the system.log
file. This is where my current efforts are focused.

The last item that gets written to the system log on an unsuccessful boot
with this machine is:
"Netinfo timeout connecting to local domain, sleeping"
As I mentioned I tried to get the Netinfo database rebuilt but was
unsuccessful. If someone has some insight into the correct way to do this (I
tried Peter's idea, and a couple of others from the net).

I am working a lot in single-user mode trying to diagnose and fix this
problem. I also tried running through the boot sequence from rc.boot,
rc.common, and rc to try to see where the error was occurring. One thing
that is disturbing is that when running SystemStarter I get the following
error:
"ipconfig_get_option failed, (os/kern) failure"
A few more successes run buy then:
Then right after starting the system log:
"zsh: bus error systemstarter"
Note that this error occurs at about the same place that this happens in
multi-user startup (but hard to tell because you don't get a lot of text in
the windowed startup mode).

The ipconfig error has been traced to the following command from the network
shell script in /system/library/startupitems
'ipconfig getoption "" host_name'

Note: ifconfig seems to be successful. The response to ifconfig -a is:
lo0: flags=8049<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 16384
          inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000oo

This is unlikely to be a hardware problem. I can connect to the Internet
when I boot into MacOS 9.2.

Any new ideas out there??
