i'd recomend running any disk repair tools you have, corruption of the file system on
either end could do that.  also, trash relevant preferences (sorry, i haven't played 
with
os x much yet, but some things stay the same).  you might also check your firewire and
ethernet cables.  more details of your setup (i.e. what model of machines, what os on
each, information on your network etc.).  certainly, if there have been crashes the 
file
system is likely to be damaged.  damage on the boot drive or possibly on another drive
could be causing problems.  given the problems you are having i really think checking 
the
file systems is the best place to start, even if that's not what's causing the problem
it's probably become corrupt from the problems you've had and will cause other problems
even if it's not causing the current problem.  i'd also check for viruses, as os x is
based on unix and there are exploits and viruses out there that can attack os x causing
any number of problems.  it's a place to start in any case, it could be hardware,
software, or both.
