I did a custom install so that I could save massive amounts of space by not installing: Languages & Printer drivers I don't need nor use. I was surprised that Panther includes the wonderful Gimp Print Drivers that work with older printers and many PC printers using a USB to Parallel printer cable.
Amazing 45 min later I'm on the web with no install issues! To my surprise it seems a bit faster then Jaguar in general use and apps are very snappy to launch. Safari is much improved and launches in 2 secs or less! The amazing thing is:
1. This is an older slower hard drive
2. I've not yet installed any cache control software! Jaguar is dog slow without the cache software!
3.Journaling is turned on. I had planned on not using this as it's said to slow machines down 10-15%
4.To my surprise the new F keys short cuts work without Quartze Extreme
F11= window shade for top open app like OS 9.x!
F10= expand apps window to full size
F9= reduce size of all open app windows and show all on screen
I only have one user so not tried the user switcher and there maybe other F key toys. I already love the window shade F11 trick though I have never used the F keys in the past.
Issues iTunes crashes when i check to see if my Firewire/PioneerA05/105 DVD RW is supported.
Suffit expander worked one time then crashes with other downloads.
I ran disk permissions repair found a few issues and fixed no real differences noticed.
Installed the small OSX 10.3.1 update. This fixed the stuffit expander crashing and my Firewire /Pioneer A05/105 is now seen as native Apple superdrive so has burning support in iTunes and disk burner.
I installed Cache Control 2.1b4 from powerlogix.com . Things are a bit faster but to my surprise not as much difference as in OS 9.x and Jaguar.
I feel that Cache Control is the best software for the Umax S900/J700 and Apple 9500/9600 machines. The reason being these machines with the exception of the last versions of 9500/9600 (and the rare Umax S910) all have non removable L2 motherboard cache. This software lets you turn this cache off. With other software this motherboard cache slows your machine down and can cause crashes and other issues. It also shows cpu temp which while not exact lets you keep an eye out on over-heating. I can't wait to get this on a faster and larger drive. Thank you Ryan for a job well done. I'm sure there will be other issues but with this fine beginning I'm sure they will get fixed! Will S
