Therefore, I strongly suspect it has something to do with the small PCI-BUS, but perhaps someone knows a cure?
Turn off QE. QE on a pci video card only adds a few percent performance improvement at best, and at worst causes problems like you're describing.
This is the *reason* Apple didn't enable it on PCI video cards...
