Tried Panther on a second 7500 with more problems. This one has a Newer G3 300/150 and 416 MB with an adapted 18 GB LVD drive on the 50-pin motherboard SCSI. Big problems trying to install 10.3. After hours & hours of troubleshooting, it appears that XPF 3.0a9 or 10.3 installation disk doesn't work correctly with the stock SCSI CD-ROM unit or any of the three other SCSI units I have. I was unable to install even with a minimal setup. The error messages in the verbose startup that seemed critical were:
Can't alloc class "ObsoleteSCSIDeviceType05" SAM Multimedia: READ or WRITE failed, ASC = 0x64, ASCQ = 0x00 Still waiting for root device . . .
I believe these were applying to the CD-ROM and this was later confirmed by using Carbon Copy Cloner to clone a good 10.3.1 installation to the 18 GB drive and then attempt restart. With the CD-ROM attached, the boot process would always hang with these messages, although sometimes the "SAM Multimedia: . . . " was missing, but the "Still waiting for root device . . ." always continued to repeat. I believe the "SAM" message happened always if there was a CD in the CD-ROM at boot, but it didn't matter whether it was the install CD or any other CD. If the CD-ROM was disconnected, the boot went normally. I've Repaired Permissions on the cloned drive, and repeated the experiment after clearing the NVRAM & PRAM, so it appears to be one of the SCSI problems with XPF 3.
I couldn't figure a workaround for the installation other than cloning. XPF 3 allows booting from Firewire drives, but not installing from Firewire CD's. For those who think their install disk is the problem, I'm 99% certain it's the CD-ROM unit. I should also say that I tried both the MESH internal bus & the external bus also. I split the HD onto one bus & CD the other, and even reversed these. No combination allowed me to install correctly. Kris Tilford
