I see many opinions that Panther "runs faster" on older supported (but only just) machines. I have Panther on a 700MHz icebook, which therefore can do QE. It's fine, but the speed doesn't make me go "wow". What does wow me is the threaded email, which does a fine if slightly imperfect job of disentangling lists like this one.

So I'm certainly considering pantherising other machines. Has anyone tried yet on a pismo powerbook? No QE support, I know, but even with 512M stuffed inside, I find Jag 10.2.8 sometimes a bit sluggish - especially in the graphics department.

The GUI on a Pismo G3/500 I just upgraded to 10.3.1 tests about 60% faster in XBench and it feels that much faster in real world GUI use. In 10.2.x, with Rage128 video (Pismo) and really anything with less than a Radeon 9000 or GeF4, I kept the video at Thousands of Colors because it made a real UI speed difference for me. In 10.3, I keep everything at Millions because the UI is much faster.

As for the iBook/700, it does not fully support Quartz Extreme because (as far as I can tell from Apple's Specs) no models shipped with 32 MB VRAM, only 16MB. 32 is required for full QE compatibility.
