OK, Panther seems to have some extreme issues with resolution and monitor
support. It would seem that anything less than a Rage 128 or some similar powered
machine cannot use quartz extreme. Does that mean that all of the lesser
machines get nothing?
Rage128 and below can't do QE. However they are Quartz accelerated (much faster than no acceleration). Only the Rage II based Macs get no video acceleration. Even RagePro based ones (iMac Rev B-D, PB WS II, B Lombard) get decent video acceleration.
I don't think that's true because I'm using it on my first
generation iMac "bondi blue" and although I have the VooDoo FX 8 Meg chipset
add on installed and a G4 upgrade card from NewerTech (G4 450, sweet). Anyway, I
am sure that with some work my Wall St. PowerBook should be able to run
Panther in one way or another. I can do without quartz extreme if it's going to be
such a pain. Hell, the visuals in OS X leave me scratching my head sometimes
anyway, I'd gladly trade the whole look and feel to have the responsiveness I
had running System 7.1 or 7.6.1 in a heartbeat. And don't talk to me about
stability, I had fantastic stability in 7.1 and mostly in 7.6.1
Just install Panther if you have it. Use the Archive and Install option if you have the free HD space as it's the cleanest way, IMO and experience. It will make the video on your older Mac go much faster than OS 10.2. See:
