Of course the ethernet cards are optional but they wouldn't be a bad idea if you can get them for 15-20 dollars each & the use of switches instead of hubs is preferable.

So there is no general benefit in adding Fast Ethernet to a beige, unless it is beneficial for the beige ITSELF to communicate faster with other machines.
Thanks for the ethernet info.
I am using DSL with an Asante 4-port router that also has a parallel printer port and wireless capabilities. I am not doing website hosting, ftp, hosting my own email service or anything like that. Right now my business needs for email and the internet are somewhere below the average home user.
My plans were to have the server, an iMac and a 9600 connected to the router. A LaserWriter printer would be connected to the printer port. On rare occasions there is a laptop connected wirelessly.
For security reasons the wireless capabilities of the router are turned off when the laptop is not present. I was also planning to connect the G3B&W that runs the cash register programs directly to the server (thus the 4-port ethernet PCI card) rather than through the router. My reasoning was that if the G3B&W is not connected to the router/internet, it is not "hackable." I know that the router, and the server itself offer some added security. But, I would like as much protection as possible when processing credit card transactions. (They go through a standard phone line that is not part of the DSL setup)
From what the two of you said, I don't need to bother upgrading the ethernet capabilities in the 9600 unless it has communication slowdowns.
