Well... maybe I'll try it again. Perhaps it'll be a Christmas present, I
think I'll have time to mess around then...

do u guys use the onBoard Video on the G3 B Revisions ?

this is what I wait for getting fixed before fiddling with the Panther again on my server

I have this dark-screen-windowserver-problem and no free PCI slot for a video card

I believe I do. This would be the RagePro, where the ROM is the 77D.45F1 version? If so, then yes. I use XPF 3.0b1, check the Patched RagePRo option, and boot. I used to have the black screen problem but that seems largely to have been solved by taking the advice of a friend in the same boat. To quote him liberally:

ok, I've found the cause of the screen goes black problem.

Check and see if your kernel spews out the following messages while
booting (you can do this by typing "dmesg" once it's booted):

extension "com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily" cannot be found
can't determine immediate dependencies for extension
com.macsales.iokit.OpenG3AIODisplay
Can't determine dependencies for com.macsales.iokit.OpenG3AIODisplay.
extension "com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport" cannot be found
can't determine immediate dependencies for extension
com.macsales.iokit.GossamerNDRVSupport
Can't determine dependencies for
com.macsales.iokit.GossamerNDRVSupport.
Couldn't alloc class "OpenG3AIODisplay"
Couldn't alloc class "GossamerNDRVSupport"

I noticed that I get the screen goes black problem when these messages
are present and I don't when they aren't.

If you get the messages, it means that the system doesn't know enough
about these XpostFacto kernel extensions. To teach the system, do the
following as root:

cd /System/Library/Extensions
kextcache -k GossamerNDRVSupport.kext
kextcache -k OpenG3AIODisplay.kext

and reboot.

Once booted, those messages should no longer be present.

Do not select the "use old NDRV" option in xpostFacto. Only select the
"use PatchedRagePro" option. But make sure to modify the options before
doing the kextcache thing because it seems that the problem occurs
when XpostFacto makes changes in the /System/Library/Extensions
folder. I think you can emulate the problem by simply doing
"touch /System/Library/Extensions".

I asked if the fix was general or rev-specific, but got no reply bac - he apparently didn't know that there were different ROM versions to consider.

hth.

p.s. the only other (possible) factor in an almost-completely-black-screen-free system is that I've entered the following in terminal, based on information found on, I think, macosxhints:

defaults write com.apple.CrashReporter DialogType none

I think this is the equivalent of an option in Tinker Tool to tell CrashReporter to shut up.
