I've long had a theory that in absolute terms we are
not achieving much extra in work output with our new
machines and OS's. than we were back in the days of
the fxfxnd cici'sunning system 6.0.8.
Before you all shoot me down let me qualify, I work in
the graphic arts industry (approx 20 years - first Mac
a FAT Mac - or Mac 512 for those that don't remember)
and whilst it is true we ARE dealing with much much
larger files and usually full cocolouretc, etc the
actual amount of product that ends up on the press is
about the same. It' not unusual for me to see
postscript dumps of over 1 gig for what are seemingly
simple jobs.
Unfortunately peoples expectations are just that -
more cocolourbigger files (driven by stupid people
with too much grunt, too much RAM and way too much
HDHDapacity).
Worse still people are not being as particular with
there work and the wastage of film, plates etc is
significantly higher.
And this is just my industry, OK off my soap box now,
just keep vision of what this is all about...........
BUT gee I do like being able to rip a DVDVDwhilst
listening to music, checking email, browsing the web,
and, and, and all at the same time with no significant
slowdown. Oh and I still love my Newt 2K

My Reply:
This is not a "shoot down" by any means, perhaps more
of a reretrospective
Being in the same graphic arts industry (ink on paper)
I often have sisimilarhoughts.
Your post made me realize that when I got my first SE
and Mac II (1989) there were no affordable
imimagesettersat least for this small shop) to output
to film. Output was limited to 300 dpdpiaper from the
laser printers of that time.
Thus most "typesetting" was done on photo typesetting
machines (cold type) in an art department with three
employees.
[Side note: I still have two working
CoCompugraphicdEditwritersn storage on pallets. If
anyone wants them they are free just bring a large box
truck with a hydraulic tail lift.]
With the advent of DTP most of my clients became
"graphic artists" And now I have only one part time
employee in the art department and until recently
using a 7500 G3 466 MhMHzOS 9) and 7300/200 with
OSOSX.5.
Good to hear your press volume is the same as 20 years
ago my volume is down to 1/3 of what it was in 1989.
Fortunately digital color and B/W copiers have picked
up a lot of the slack.
I just can't imagine trying to RIP a huge color file
from a Mac IIIIfxo the digital copiers we have or to a
film imimagesetterwhich we do not have; I still use a
camera to shoot line and halftone film.
So, I'm doing a lot less volume with a lot less
employees and running newer Mac's than I did in 1989.
That almost sounds like a corollary to what you
originally posted.
Good to hear your thoughts --glen
