Okay, I have most of the details nailed down now thanks to the kind
help here, both off and on list and from additional browsing of
Roku's website and some Google hunting. All those together filled in
more and more holes until it made sense of a sort.
First of all, the Sound Bridge FAQ
<http://www.rokulabs.com/products/soundbridge/faq.php> actually has
an entry about Mac OS Classic. The Sound Bridge requires OSX,
because version 2.x of iTunes was the last to support Mac OS Classic
and Sound Bridge requires iTunes 4.0 or greater.
iTunes 4.0 requires Mac OSX 10.1.5 or later,
<http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10227&vid=102692&mode=info>.
Anyone know of a hack that will make iTunes 4.0 or later run on Mac
OS Classic?
I suspect that Sound Bridge requires iTunes 4.0 or greater because
according to Wikipedia, <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes>,
version 4.0 was the first version of iTunes which implemented Music
Sharing.
From what I could gather at VersionTracker
<http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10227&vid=180693&mode=info>
iTunes was compatible with OSX 10.1.5 right up to iTunes version
4.7.1. It was only with the latest iTunes 4.8 that OSX 10.2.8 became
a requirement.
Of course, the iTunes music store may have other requirements, but I,
personally, am not concerned with music store compatibility, only
Sound Bridge compatibility.
iTunes will support whatever CD ripping I wish to do without
additional software and iTunes is either free with MacOSX or a free
download.
So it's all good except for two remaining issues.
iTunes 4.8 is the only version available for download, anywhere, as
far as I can tell. I'm not sure what version is included in 10.03,
10.1 Update and 10.15 Update which I have here.
The "Sound Bridge Wired Setup" dia gram at
<http://www.rokulabs.com/products/soundbridge/faq.php#slim> states
that one needs a DHCP router in one's setup. I do not understand
this, not really knowing what a DHCP router is and have emailed
Roku's support about it. I suspect that this is something one needs
in the wireless version, or maybe if one is using a high-speed
internet connection for Internet Radio (another feature of Sound
Bridge). My home network is all cabled, goes through a simple hub,
and there is no connection to Cable or DSL internet.
Can anyone shed some light on this DHCP Router requirement?
Second, I would like to get my hands on versions 4.0, 4.01, 4.5 and
4.7 of iTunes (not 4.7.1). If folks who have these versions and are
willing to help me out could contact me off list, I'd appreciate it.
I'm not sure how many megabytes were talking about. I may have to
spring for some blank CDs and postage if they're large.
Many thanks to all who have helped,
Jeff Walther
