Further probing reveals that the MacDNS server is getting a Type 12 (reverse lookup?) query, just before it crashes, for this bizarre address:

"1.0.0.127.dnsbugtest"

Quite why a 10.4.4 client is sending out such a query using the localhost name is beyond me. I speculate that someone has inadvertently left some debugging code in 10.4.4 release, and that this code has something to do with making Tiger's dns work equally well on bigendian and littleendian (intel) machines, and somehow my vintage Mac is receiving dns queries it shouldn't be getting which fry it's little 68030 brain.

Of course, a DNS server, however old, should be immune to malformed data. Equally, however, I somehow think that a new OS release ought not to be sending out queries for a host called "1.0.0.127.dnsbugtest". Something strange here.

For years on my small network I've used MacDNS on a vintage Mac to provide a basic private DNS behind NAT. Yes I know it's old and a bit flaky, but it wasn't broken enough to demand fixing.

Until now. Changing two client machines from Mac OS X 10.4.3 to 10.4.4 has broken MacDNS. It grumbles about malformed enquiries before crashing with a System Error of Type 2, which I think means a memory alignment error. I infer that some enquiry that 10.4.4 sends out is confusing the old MacDNS and causing it to try to process misaligned data. This seems very odd.

As soon as I can, I'll roll out a BIND daemon on one of my boxes to take on the DNS job. But it's still a bit disconcerting to find this apparent mismatch between old and new. I wonder if Tiger 10.4.4 is genuinely sending out wonky packets, which might cause problems with other kinds of name service as well?
