Further probing reveals that the MacDNS server is getting a Type 12 (reverse lookup?) query, just before it crashes, for this bizarre address:

Quite why a 10.4.4 client is sending out such a query using the localhost name is beyond me. I speculate that someone has inadvertently left some debugging code in 10.4.4 release, and that this code has something to do with making Tiger's dns work equally well on bigendian and littleendian (intel) machines, and somehow my vintage Mac is receiving dns queries it shouldn't be getting which fry it's little 68030 brain.

DNS shouldn't care about *endian issues, or rather, since there have ALWAYS been *endian issues it shouldn't matter as DNS long ago was fixed to deal with this and there's likely no reason for Apple to be screwing with the TCP/IP stack at this point in OSX'es development, I would think.

(Though far be it from me to claim understanding of why Apple does what it does)

Of course, a DNS server, however old, should be immune to malformed data. Equally, however, I somehow think that a new OS release ought not to be sending out queries for a host called "1.0.0.127.dnsbugtest". Something strange here.

I'd do a packet capture on the network see which system is doing this. Google offers up nothing on this in a search, which if this were a widely reported issue, I think it would have.
