SHEESH, which Acard are you guys using?! I'm using the 6280M and I'm
about to toss it about as far as I can! Intermittant boot up in 10.4.4
and crashes causing corruption of the "B Tree Header" and other
problems; and in 9.2.2 I keep getting a disc error message, with "BEEP",
about every 3-8 seconds. Super annoying, especially when I'm running
Disk First Aid to repair the 10.4.4 partition! These symptoms occur in
an 8600 with Sonnet G4/800, or a 7500 with the XLR8 ZIF adapter running
a G3/350. I pop in the Sonnet Tempo Trio in either machine, and all
these problems magically go away. With the Sonnet, playback in iTunes,
Quicktime or MS Windows Media Player works without stutter. What gives?

ATA cards have had issues with the older PCI slots from the
beginning and Sonnet's seem to be some of the most consistent in
that regard. The most noticeable symptom has been stuttering when
playing back audio. From my understanding it results from some kind
of improper synchronization and the PCI bus gets overloaded. SCSI
controllers have remained devoid of this issue. I've personally
never had a performance or stuttering problem when using Acard's
adapters though. YMMV.
This is exactly my experience with the same controllers in PowerSurge
machines. I have had only Acard ATA designs and have never had an
audio stuttering issue in 7300, 7600 and 8500 machines. In fact, my
first mp3 jukebox was a PMac 7600 604e/260MHz with a TurboMax ATA/33
(Acard rebranded) with a 12.7GB Quantum EX ATA. No stuttering, even
when moved to a clone machine- a MacTell XB 200 MHz 603e (same as
Motorola StarMax 3200).
