Hallgrim Petursson (1614–1674), known as the ‘Icelandic Paul Gerhardt,’ was one
of the most influential pastors in his nation during the Age of Orthodoxy
(1580–1713). Petursson’s burial hymn (included in this booklet) is used at many
funerals to this day and his 50 Passion-Hymns (portions of which are included
in this booklet) continue to be read every Lent. Pilcher’s introduction offers
an excellent overview of the life and work of this Lutheran hymnist. (Booklet,
