From now through March 9, Repristination Press is offering a sale on two of our
more popular devotional works: Johann Gerhard's An Explanation of the History
of the Suffering and Death of our Lord Jesus Christ and Hallgrim Petursson's
The Way of the Cross. The price for both works is $30.00 (plus shipping).

An Explanation of the History of the Suffering and Death of our Lord Jesus
Christ (1622), by Johann Gerhard
transl. by Rev. Dr. Elmer Hohle

Gerhard's concern as a theologian was, above all, pastoral, and this concern is
reflected in his numerous devotional books and sermon collections. Gerhard's
"An Explanation" leads the reader through many types and prophecies in the Old
Testament pointing forward to Christ's suffering and death.

The work is divided into two introductory sermons and five ‘acts’ (I. In the
Garden, II. At the Home of Caiaphas, III. Before Pilate, IV. Christ’s
Crucifixion, and V. Christ’s Burial) for a total of 24 sermons. However,
readers will find that this books is far from “just another book of
sermons”—Gerhard’s profound depth of knowledge of Holy Scripture and his
ability to draw together the Old Testament prototypes with their fulfillment in
Christ combine to make this work a true blessing. (Hardcover, 329 pages)

“The Way of the Cross”—Selections from the Poetry of Hallgrim Petursson
Hallgrim Petursson (1614–1674), known as the ‘Icelandic Paul Gerhardt,’ was one
of the most influential pastors in his nation during the Age of Orthodoxy
(1580–1713). Petursson’s burial hymn (included in this booklet) is used at many
funerals to this day and his 50 Passion-Hymns (portions of which are included
in this booklet) continue to be read every Lent. Pilcher’s introduction offers
an excellent overview of the life and work of this Lutheran hymnist. (Booklet,
24 pages)
