+ Information for Confess And Teach For Unity's eList Subscribers +

If the subject line didn't make sense, please feel free to stop reading...and
definitely DO NOT reply and cause me to get my hopes up needlessly!

EVERY set of instructions I've seen on how to add suexec to an existing Apache
installation on OS X Leopard (10.5.X), Apple's flavor of BSD UNIX has *failed.*
They all either copy one another, paraphrase one another, or contradict one
another, and some of them have things that are obviously wrong, even to *my*
eyes. So...help me, please!

Here's the setup:

OS X 10.5.8

Apache 2.2.17 (latest version, Apple provided, from Apple's last security
update last week)

httpd -v shows: Server version: Apache/2.2.17 (Unix)

Document directory will be /Library/WebServer/Documents

Caller is _www

So, for configure, I have used variations of:

./configure --with-layout=Darwin --enable-suexec --with-suexec-caller=_www
--with-suexec-docroot=/Library/WebServer/Documents

where "variations" means "substituting Unix for Darwin and/or www for _www just
in case the instructions were wrong for my setup."

but, no matter what, after having copied the resulting suexec file to
/usr/sbin/ and/or to /usr/bin/ (since all of the 'instructions say to copy it
to sbin, but doing httpd -V tells me " -D SUEXEC_BIN="/usr/bin/suexec""), there
si still no "suEXEC mechanism enabled (wrapper: /usr/sbin/suexec)" (or "suEXEC
mechanism enabled (wrapper: /usr/bin/suexec)" if that would be the correct
thing to expect) in my error_log file.

I've heard that apxs may be useful for this, but I'm not sure what to do with
that information.

Folks, I really never intended to do this much messing around in UNIX; I just
want to get Virtualmin able to run, so that I can use Mailman without having to
keep doing command line stuff every time I want to set up a new email
list/domain...so, if you've got some suggestions for me as to how to do this
(or if you want to have access to the server to do it for me), I will certainly
appreciate your assistance greatly. All I know is that if I don't stop seeing
"Suexec is enabled in the default template, but the Apache module mod_suexec is
not installed or not enabled" in Virtualmin, I'm still dead in the water for a
much-needed leaving behind of our current list server, which hasn't been
updated since '07 and can't be run on anything after OS X 10.4.X, which means
I've got to 'waste' a whole machine on that OS for no other reason.

Thanks,

EJG
