James Heiser is a member of the Board of Directors and the Steering Committee of the Mars Society, as well as a founding member of the organization. He is the author of two volumes of essays on spiritual and theological issues related to space exploration and settlement: A Shining City on a Higher Hill (2006) and Civilization and the New Frontier (2010). Heiser has served as a parish pastor since 1996, and in 2006 was called to serve as bishop of The Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of North America. He is also Dean of Missions of The Augustana Ministerium and is the President of the Center for the Study of Lutheran Orthodoxy.
