A Shining City on a Higher Hill—
Christianity and the Next New World
by James D. Heiser, M.Div., S.T.M.
Now in its second printing, the thirteen essays in this volume were originally
delivered to Mars Society and Higher Things conferences between 1998 and 2005.
Although many books have been written on the broader topics of the “Science and
Religion” dialog, it is one of the few books which addresses topics of space
exploration and colonization from a Christian perspective. This second printing
has been prepared for the upcoming 15th annual convention of the Mars
Society—the title essay was presented at the society's founding convention at
UC-Boulder in 1998.

The Rt. Rev. James Heiser is a member of the Board of Directors and the
Steering Committee of the Mars Society, as well as a founding member of the
organization. He is the author of two volumes of essays on spiritual and
theological issues related to space exploration and settlement: A Shining City
on a Higher Hill (2006) and Civilization and the New Frontier (2010).

Civilization and the New Frontier
by James D. Heiser, M.Div., S.T.M.
Civilization and the New Frontier contains four essays by one of the scholars
engaged in discussions of the relationship between science and religion in the
field of space exploration. Bishop Heiser is a founding member of the Mars
Society and currently serves on the Board of Directors and Steering Committee
of that organization. He has also served in parish ministry for sixteen years
and has been bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of North America since
2006. The essays in this volume focus on the relationship between Virtue and
the establishment of a civilization and draw on the wisdom of philosophers,
scientists and theologians of over twenty centuries to address the issues of
expanding human civilization beyond the confines of Earth.
