If you like command line, BitchX or Irssi are my favorites. If you're
on a mac and have fink installed, you can apt-get them easily.

I would suggest getting an irc client that only does irc. Those
seem to
be a little easier to setup and use. check google on some out there. I
personally use xchat on windows and linux for my client.
If you are using mozilla they have chatzilla which is pretty nice too.
