Good idea. My suggestion to make it better:

If the calendar is always up to date and corrections made etc. perhaps
something could be used that sends reminders for calendar items some
period of time in advance. If any calendar item is changed after the
reminder is sent, it would send another email noting the change.

This would make it easier for people who change the calendar and send
announcement messages. Only one thing would have to be done instead of
two, and people could still get the info the way they prefer.

(Some people like email reminders because it comes to them instead of
having to go to it and look. Other people prefer it the other way around.)
