However, if they are in an MS environment doing C# then sql server would fit into that environment and be a very reasonable solution based on the fact that the integration would be simple. Now if they are using PHP on unix and doing odbc to sql server then i would question that.

But, i agree, questioning their intelligence is not the issue at hand.
