Not that I work for Symphony or anything, but with the latest version of
Symphony, they have cleaned up a lot.  Also as far as ORM, you could
also use Doctrine (which is PDO based, php 5.2 and up ), in place of
Propel, or write your own.  I personally like Propel, but can defiantly
see why people may not like it.

I've recently begun using cake at work and so far I'm loving it. Once

learn to just do a few thing the cake way it makes developing a breeze.

also used codeigniter a little. Its a good, lightweight framework. But I
enjoy all the features that cake presents me with. I tried using Symfony

year or so ago and just couldn't get it to work. I didn't like Propel
that
it used for its ORM.
