Not that I work for Symphony or anything, but with the latest version of Symphony, they have cleaned up a lot. Also as far as ORM, you could also use Doctrine (which is PDO based, php 5.2 and up ), in place of Propel, or write your own. I personally like Propel, but can defiantly see why people may not like it.
