The rewrite happens in apache. The program you're using might need to
be tweaked to show even fancier urls (so, the url might say
/actualcategoryname/actualitemname/ instead of a categoryid/itemid/
type url.) If you're using a pre-made program like a cart or CMS, its
very likely someone's already written a plugin that will do the grunt
work for you.
