Great point, Mac. I recall Datawolf (I believe) spoke about this technique at a UPHPU meeting a couple years ago. I believe he was even using the 404 document to check referring sites and notify them automatically if they had a bad link to his site.

the one thing that i hate about redirects in apache is that you dont have total control over the response code sent back. So you are sending back a redirect header that triggers the browser to resubmit a new request. I love the error page example in that you can control the response and then send them the correct information without the browser requesting again.

we set this up for timinator one time and it worked really great; at least i think we did that ;)
