GD2 library would do the work :), I always use it in my projects and works
great, but sometimes I could be a little tricky, but nothing to be afraid
of.

You should look for a class based on GD2 in phpclasses.org I think you
could find something great there.

If you're using a framework, like CodeIgniter, it might have a core
library/helper that handles images.
