Hi. New guy here on UPHPU but not new to PHP. I work at BYU. I used to develop using Kate on Linux, but that was just a very fancy text editor, not an IDE. A couple of years ago I decided to look into an IDE and started with Netbeans. Its XDebug integration worked and my productivity went way up. About a year ago I started using PhpStorm and I love it! It is much more powerful than Netbeans. Its remote deployment and debugging functions are much easier to use than Netbeans. I also like being able to run a project locally using PHP's built-in web server so I don't even have to have Apache installed locally anymore. PhpStorm is not perfect; there are a few things I like in Netbeans better, but I can do everything I want efficiently in PhpStorm. So I would go with PhpStorm first, then Netbeans. If you are a professional PHP developer and are not using an IDE, you are missing out.
