I sent this message out (to the old list address) on Monday after our discussion at the Dev meeting. Best I can tell it didn't make it to the world at-large. Trying again w/ the new address...

Subject: XML Import/Export for uP2 Using Cernunnos

Hey folks,

For those who attended the Dev meeting discussion on this topic and
those who didn't alike...

A few weeks back I developed features for uP2 (v2.5.3 is what I'm using)
that allow me to import & export data entities -- like users, groups,
channels, and layouts -- in human readable, domain-specific XML documents.

These features seemed compelling to me because now and again I need to
"configure" (viz. customize heavily) a uPortal data set and then
"deploy" it to several environments quickly and reliably.

I implemented these features as XML "scripts" for Cernunnos -- an open
source Java project (started by me) on Google Code. You can see it here:

There's a lot more detailed information on these features and the
approach used in implementing them here:

Thanks to Andrew Petro for facilitating the discussion since I couldn't
be there, and thanks to the folks who shared their perspectives at the
Dev meeting.
