uPortal 2.6.0 RC2 demonstrates this technique in its bundling of the JA-SIG Bookmarks Portlet.  The Bookmarks Portlet uses Hibernate to access its own DataSource, which in the default configuration is an HSQLDB database pre-populated with interesting bookmarks for the "admin" user.
