Hi all,
While trying out the up3 quickstart, it occurred to me that we might
want to put some thought into updating the default user layouts before
the GA release. Some of the channels are pretty old, and a few of the
feeds are broken.
I was thinking it might make sense to add some new example feeds -
perhaps ones that might be particularly useful to end users (maybe the
NY Times or BBC News, or something like that) or are JA-SIG related or
otherwise technology focused. New image channels in addition to the
Daily Business Cartoon might be nice too. The number of available RSS
feeds has increased substantially in the last few years.
Having updated CWebProxy and IFrame examples might be nice too. In
particular, it would be nice if we had a site or two with a clean, small
layout (not very wide, in particular) that would display nicely as
CWebProxy or IFrame channels. It seems like there's some content in the
default layout that isn't necessarily particularly interesting by
itself, but serves as a useful example, such as the Minesweeper
channel. Maybe some of these channels could be labeled as "Example
Applet", "Example Image Channel", etc. This might also make it more
clear what features the channels are intended to demonstrate. I'd also
love to make some of the new, cool portlets like the Google search and
bookmarks portlets more visible.
I think the guest layout in particular could use some modification. The
DLM admin guide probably isn't the most useful thing to see as the very
first screen you see after downloading the quickstart. Also, I don't
know if that channel is actually being updated; pointing to the
documentation in the up3 manual and the wiki might make more sense at
this point.
It might be particularly cool to have a list of useful uPortal related
bookmarks in the portal. I was thinking of something that maybe had
links to the up3 manual, the wiki, the JA-SIG newsletter, email lists,
the list of uportal-driven sites, commercial partners, etc. Someday it
would be pretty neat if we had a way of initializing a bookmarks portlet
with this list. For now, that seems like a heavy list for this release,
but it would be easy to implement this as a CGenericXSLT channel for the
time being.
Does this sound like something that might be valuable for the 3.0
general release? Do you all have opinions and suggestions regarding
what new content we could add? If we came up with a new layout, or
layout modifications, I'd be more than happy to modify the layout
resources that are used to set up the up3 database accordingly.
If we do decide some updates are a good idea, where might be a good
place in the wiki to start recording this information for collaboration?
