Defaults change. Choosing to use CAS gets easier. All the options are still there.

I would expand on Andrew's (surprisingly brief ;) ) response to add:

The overall authentication & authorization architecture in uPortal is unchanged, though there has and continues to be active engineering work in re-factoring, unit testing, and modularization. All the pluggable authentication channels, and integrations are still there, though configuration files from previous versions of the portal may need to be updated as the format of some options has changed.

In uPortal 2.6.x the default implementation of authentication that was demonstrated was against a built-in database, with the portal collecting the username/password.

In uPortal 3.0 the default implementation of authentication demonstrates integration with a SSO system (JA-SIG CAS 3.2) which has been pre-configured to point to the uPortal user database, so as to deliver a similar experience. Given the growth in deployment of SSO/ RSO systems across campuses, this seems to be a more realistic demonstration of a typical portal deployment scenario, as well as showcasing the capabilities of CAS, another JA-SIG project which has gained significant adoption across many deployments.
