Hi Susan, Thanks for doing some testing! I'll take a look at the portlet manager crash you reported - you're right that that's definitely not the intended behavior :)
Since we haven't introduced separate subscribe and render permissions, you're right that subscribing to "hidden" channels as a fragment owner is still a problem. We ultimately decided that introducing separate render vs. subscribe permissions is probably too complex a change until we improve the permissions management UI. I'm not sure how we want to handle this in the meantime. One potential solution might be to introduce a new "can subscribe to no-category channels permission".
