Hi all, I am an ordinary user so I may get some facts or ideas wrong. Please correct me if I'm in the wrong. This would also be a long long post so would ask you for your patience.
The idea of Upstart from what I understand is a modern service manager which will basically see what peripherals or things are there in the system and then boot only those services for which hardware is there. For e.g. I have an i845 GL motherboard (5 yrs. old) which doesn't have support for services like bluetooth, powernowd (CPU Frequency thing), no printer and some other services. At some point Upstart will be doing these so I don't have to mess around with tools like sysv-rc-conf or bum (Boot-Up Manager) . As of today as a user I need to use these tools to know and remove services which are just taking cycles and not doing anything for the user. So the tools wold becomes options. Is this right? BUM is good at doing stuff on the GUI while sysv-rc-conf in case something goes wrong and I'm not able to access the GUI interface. The other thing is there a way to have a snapshot or have a .txt file which tells about which services are running on the various run-levels which I could post to a mailing list/bulletin board service or something? I know could use gnome-screenshooter for the same but if there is some way of doing this as a .csv or some nice formatted file which would make for easier reading for people. Now that upstart 0.5 has been released when can we, ubuntu users be able to see this? As we are hardly three days from release I don't think it would make this cycle. Perhaps in Intrepid-proposed ? Also is there a roadmap page for when upstart 0.5 would make it in ubuntu . The only thing I have seen so far is this page https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReplacementInit which doesn't give any roadmap anywhere. The only recent conversation which I have seen is at https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel-discuss/2008-September/005484.html which is a big long thread I'm currently reading as well. It would be nice to have some updates on when can we expect some changes in ubuntu and also if any feedback is needed from users . Looking forward to any plans/details/suggestions/comments on the same. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal This email is licensed under http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ 065C 6D79 A68C E7EA 52B3 8D70 950D 53FB 729A 8B17 -- upstart-devel mailing list upstart-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/upstart-devel
