Sunday � June 22 � 2003 Hospital death angers Mom Son at Sacr� Coeur with broken leg MIKE KING The Gazette Saturday, June 21, 2003 A Dollard des Ormeaux family wants to know why their son died during treatment for a broken leg at a Montreal hospital - where two similar deaths occurred five years ago. "Until I get some answers about what took place or they can change my mind, I believe they are responsible," Bernadette Millet said yesterday about Sacr� Coeur Hospital, where she lost the youngest of her four sons last weekend. Sheldon Millet was involved in a car accident early on June 13; one of his brothers arrived on the scene as he was taken by ambulance to Sacr� Coeur. The brother called their mother, who rushed from her home to the Cartierville-district hospital. Millet had a fractured right ankle, torn ligaments in his left leg, and a cut to his forehead. Surgery was scheduled to repair the break that Friday evening, but Millet said her son called to say it had been postponed to the next morning. She received another call from him Saturday morning to say the operation was being put off again, this time until Monday. The next call, this one from the hospital, came about 1 a.m. Sunday, informing her Millet had taken a turn for the worse. "I arrived at 1:30 or 1:45 and he was already dead," she said. "This child was alive and talking and laughing up until at least 11 p.m. (Saturday)," Millet recalled. "It's unacceptable." Her son would have celebrated his 22nd birthday on July 10. Both the family and the hospital are awaiting coroner's and autopsy reports on what Sacr� Coeur official Jacques Laplante called "an inexplicable death." Laplante, assistant director of professional services, said Millet "was clinically stable, then experienced unexpected convulsions and died." Laplante suggested the case "does not at all follow the same pattern" found in two separate incidents that occurred in 1998. During that year, Jean-S�bastien Martel and Isabel Perreault were admitted to the Sacr� Coeur emergency room with broken legs during the night shift. Martel, 18, died two hours after his June 1 admission after being overfed an intravenous saline solution. Perreault, 28, spent 14 hours in the ER before she died when her respiratory system shut down because of the drugs she was given. A coroner concluded in both instances that medical error was to blame. The Quebec College of Physicians and Surgeons, as well as the provincial Order of Nurses, subsequently carried out investigations and made recommendations, all of which Laplante said have since been implemented. A funeral service for Sheldon Millet is to take place today at 10 a.m. at Rideau Memorial Gardens in Dollard.
