I don't think totem is supposed to be a music player. Once a music player enters the GNOME Desktop (rhythmbox?) it would probably be a good idea to disable music playing support by default. mpt mentioned this part of the GNOME desktop here: http://mpt.net.nz/archive/2005/04/11/ubuntu (read from number 43) My 2 cents.
