This isn't really a USB question.

"MSC" means "mass storage compliant". You don't really care, it sounds you
want to perform operations on the raw disk, like partitioning the disk or
formatting it, even if its interface protocol is not Mass Storage
Compliant.

Search the Apple documentation for:
"Disk Utility"
diskutil
hditutil
Disk Arbitration Framework

this should help you on your way.
