To code sign a macOS app, I think you need an Apple issues developer
certificate.
Apple Developer membership is something like $99 USD per year (or around
that). You can sign up if you don;t already have an account at
developer.apple.com. A code signing cert is then "free" for anyone with
a developer account.

want to sign, but now it’s asking me the name of the certificiate. I know I
have a code signing certificate because when I digitally sign PDFs, that’s the
certificate I have. I found it in my Keychain, and made sure it was valid for
code signing. They only problem is it is a self signed certificate.
Am I required to get a trusted certificate, and if so how do I do that from
Xcode as opposed to some other 3rd party certificate agency? Or can I even do
that??
