A graphic is a rectangle, oval, etc object that is based on vector point
information.  An image is a bitmap that is created by painting or importing
(GIF, JPEG, etc).
Thanks Scott, for furthering my education: I do know the difference between vector and bitmap representation; but had not made the association between vector/bitmap <-->graphic/image.

Are there any essential differences in the properties and/or behavior of graphics and images?
