Yes, the more I look into this the more it looks like mod_rewrite is the answer. In fact, it looks like Rewrite is the answer to a great many things, even some questions I'd never asked before. :)
Deep subject, much reading to do, but with your helpful pointers it looks like I'll be able to do what I need and more....
