But the man page is wrong: it says (and I still don't know how to cut/paste from the documentation; is that possible?) "The <i>property</i> is a built-in property name or a custom property name."

That should be "is a property name, or a variable or parameter having a property name as value".

Agree?

Or does this follow from some statement in the manual that I haven't found yet?
