Quite shocking this has not been addressed earlier. Got my votes.

The team is acutely aware of this, it is probably one of the most-requested enhancements. It isn't a bug, the features were simply never implemented.

When RR acquired the MetaCard engine, the field object was (and remains) extremely complex. Apparently Scott Raney called the field object "the beast". Every OS requires a different way of handling text manipulations. I've heard that the code for fields is some of the snarliest in the whole engine.

The team is committed to implementing all the requested features, but it is a tremendous undertaking that will require a complete rewrite of the underlying code for fields. It isn't trivial. It's on their to-do list, along with much easier unicode support.

In the mean time, we do already have support for first-line indents, subscripts, and superscripts. Rudimentary variable line spacing is accomplished by turning off fixedlineheight. I know that isn't professional-level text handling, but the rest will be coming.
