Is a stand-alone really that much more clutter than the plug-in and the revlet? Surely, they're about the same size, just stored in different places on the users' hard disks.

A very good point. The only disadvantage about the latter is that the end-user
actually has to download the standalone and decide where to put it and
generally spend more time on "meta" things.
