Indeed, this would be a great step forward, to have a gold standard linux distribution plus Rev installation, then we would know for sure how it was supposed to work and could work, and we'd know that any shortfalls were with our particular installation. A live USB distro might be the most useful because the fastest.
If you want something small, light and customizable to start from, there is Puppy. Yes, its true, it does not have Gnome. Stop that, you heretic! As soon as its done, I will be happy to give it a workout, and am sure others will too.
