That could well be.

Meanwhile, Firefox and other browsers use backgroundcolor to identify found text, so that technique is not foreign to most users, though it's not quite what would be perfect.

To some extent that would actually be *worse* than making the text red, because by now it's become the most widely used visual trigger for finding within a document. To then use that for spell-as-you-type or similar would just cause confusion.
