In UNIX, anything and everything in /tmp is fair game to be wiped out at system startup. Maybe Apple is doing something different because I have a "Cleanup At Startup" folder as well. Weird! But nonetheless- don't use /tmp for anything that's supposed to persist beyond your app running.
ls -F /tmp/501/ Cleanup At Startup/ Temporary Items/
