Since posting, I used ResEdit on OS 9 to look at the file coming from OS 10. Both file type & creator look empty; however if I type into the file type without selecting & deleting, I'm told there are extra characters in the field.
I set the file type & creator to "TEXTttxt", and AppleWorks V5 can now open the file; but Code Warrior's text editor won't show the file even though it shows other (non TextEdit) files with the same Type/Creator set.
My main goal, being able to move a text file from OS X to OS 9 and edit it without having to modify it first, remains elusive.
