After testing (remove from memory, empty array etc) the items do get 
called properly unfortunately I have to question how this would affect 
me using the keys property in future development?!

It is probably the flattening of the tree build with the insertions.  
When you iterate over this, test the items and see if they meet your 
subarray criteria.
