Yes, I think so. That's how Rev does its tool palette. The tools you drag from the palette are actually in stacks that follow the mouse.
It would probably be a good idea for me to implement something like this, because right now my drags have very little feedback outside of a cursor change. And as you said, one advantage of the fake stack/button technique is that you can actually see the content of what you're moving around.
